Peel Hall, Wythenshawe

Peel Hall is an area of Wythenshawe approximately nine miles south of Manchester City Centre and a mile north of Manchester Airport in North West England. Peel Hall is on the eastern boundary of Wythenshawe and borders Heald Green and Gatley in Stockport.
The area comprises both social housing and private housing, most of which were built in the 1950s and 1960s. There are approximately 950 housing association properties, which are ex-council housing stock. Over half of these are houses with two or three bedrooms, and there are approximately 350 flats in low blocks, and 40 bungalows. Peel Hall forms the southern portion of the Sharston Ward of Manchester City Council.
Peel Hall gets its name from an Elizabethan moated manor house/farm which was situated just off Peel Hall Road at the junction of Lomond Road. It belonged, at one stage, to the Egertons of Wythenshawe Hall. It should not be confused with the c. 1460 Smyths or Smiths Peelhouse Prescot Parish Farnworth in Widnes or similarly named Peel fortifications of the era. It was part of Northenden Parish and the area was known as Northen Etchells until the reorganization of Wythenshawe following the purchase of the estate by the city of Manchester in the 1920s. The Peel Hall manor house fell into disrepair in the 1960s and was demolished. The moat survives, surrounded by a small park which has recreation facilities and a small children's playground. The moat was not a defensive moat, but similar to the one at Little Morton Hall, in Cheshire, which was an Elizabethan feature to keep out animals.
